Teaching Children About the Weather in Spanish and English

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

Here are the words to our bilingual kids song about The Weather/El tiempo off our Sing Along with Boca Beth Music CD:

“The Weather Song / La canción de tiempo”
(sung to the tune of “Eeensy Weensy Spider”)

It’s a sunny day
Es un día soleado
I see the sun
Veo el sol
The sun is yellow
El sol es Amarillo
The sun is bright
El sol es brillante.

It’s a cloudy day
Es un día nublado
There are many clouds
Hay muchas nubes.
Look at the clouds!
Mira las nubes.
The clouds make it shady
Las nubes dan sombra.

It’s a rainy day
Es un día lluvioso
I see the rain.
Veo la lluvia.
We feel the rain
Sentimos la lluvia.
It feels good
Se siente bien.

It’s a windy day
Es un día ventoso
The wind blows fast.
El viento sopla rápido
Look at the leaves
Mira las hojas
I like the wind
Me gusta el viento.

Here are the suggested classroom/circle time activities to do with this song to bring the learning to life:

Great visual aids for the weather can be found in many teaching stores or online shops. Use the pictures and the words in both languages for this song. Choose one child to hold the picture of sunny, cloudy, rainy and windy. Then have other children hold the words up next to the corresponding picture for each weather word as you sing about it.  Another age-appropriate activity for the 4s and 5s would be to make weather pictures as the song plays, prompting them to draw about the particular verse being sung.  Then use their pictures to create a ‘Weather Bulletin Board’ that is bilingual!

Changing Seasons Brings a Weather Lesson for Toddlers, Preschoolers and Early Elementary Students

Monday, September 27th, 2010

I remember being in the classroom around this time of year with my students and thinking “What age appropriate lesson will help them understand the change of seasons?”  Living in Florida we don’t necessarily understand nor do we get to experience the changing of the seasons.  I would always have leaves from our Northern relatives pressed in wax paper, pictures of the fall foliage, and clips of life in other climates readily available for these lessons!

Let’s enjoy together our Weather Song / Canción de tiempo off our Sing Along with Boca Beth music CD this week as the backdrop to our weather lesson fun ideas.  Share an idea with us below, and be entered to win this Boca Beth CD plus two other bilingual treats from me!
