Are We Doing our Young Children a Disservice?

Friday, December 6th, 2013

three fun kids for cd 2

We have all heard it said ~ “Little children are like sponges when it comes to learning.  They just soak it all in!”

It’s so true; yet our country does not capitalize on this wonderful period of learning and help our children prepare for this very global economy into which they have been born.  Not one state has mandated early childhood second language learning; yet in many other countries young children are learning two and three languages before the age of 10 and in many cases before the age of 5.

I am consistently asking this question, “Are we doing our young children a disservice by not teaching them more than English – waiting until middle or high school when experts all agree is much more difficult than when a child is ages birth to five.”

You tell me what you think …. please / por favor.

I have always loved the fact that as the owner of my own business I can make decisions right away about what to do with the direction of my company.

When Cyber Monday 2013 was approaching I asked only my Executive Director (my husband and best friend!) if he had any thoughts about what special discount I should offer existing and potentially new customers.  He put it so very well, “You wish to move through some extra product every Christmas Season, and there are many people out there looking for an affordable way to help their kids learn Spanish so why not make it 50% off and help all of you?”

So I started a 50% savings yesterday that will last through the entire week (through 12/7/13) with code CYBER (Yes!  I know!  Real original!  But it’s easy for all to remember!)

Children CAN Learn More Than One Language at a Young Age

Wednesday, May 8th, 2013

I will never forget being at a MOPS Convention where I could barely give away our Boca Beth bilingual coloring/activity book.  The moms would tell me on the exhibit floor that the preschool age is too young to begin teaching Junior a second language – that learning a second language would only confuse him as he learns English.

With the article found at the link below you will read exactly why all of these young moms were so very incorrect:

Bilingual beats add up to literacy and math learning fun for young children.

Now SEE and HEAR proof that young children CAN learn a 2nd language early and have fun:

When I created the Boca Beth Program I did it with busy parents and teachers in mind who have no time for reading a 32 page How to Manual!  And I had the little children in mind who are sponges during the early years of life and soak up all this new stuff quickly!

So many of the Boca Beth Language Learning Sets are super affordable and produce similar results that $499 Curriculum Kits produce with more fun and way less money.  Save 20% on any Boca Beth Spanish and English fun learning product with code bocarocks.  (Shipping is always free in the United States.)

Why Should You Introduce a New Language Early?

Wednesday, May 30th, 2012

Experts agree, the earlier the better when it comes to introducing a second language to that special young child in your life.  Ages birth through five are the most formative years of a child’s brain – with 90% of the human brain being developed by age 5.

It’s not wonder then that you should be thinking about your child’s early learning.  You see what a sponge your child is…make the most of this window of opportunity without pushing things, and your child will develop at an advanced rate thanks to the many benefits derived from working different areas of the brain.

Don’t get caught in the trap that many new parents believe ~ that is the “No second language for my child.  I do not want to confuse him and cause language delay by introducing a new language.  There will be plenty of time for her to learn a second and third language later in life.”

Truth be told, there will NOT be plenty of time for easy, fun, and non-threatening language learning later in life.  We all have experienced or witnessed how very difficult it is to acquire a new language once we enter our teen years.  There are scientific reasons as to why it becomes more difficult with age – never impossible, simply a lot more frustrating for most.

Just peek in on these two toddlers (one less than 2 years old, the other little guy just turned 2!!!) learning Spanish right alongside English in a very child-like way:

I strongly urge you to jump on this second language bandwagon today!  Choose the language that fits your family, your community, your heritage, whatever the reason for choosing the 2nd language you choose, and get going!  Make it fun, make it part of your daily routine, and you will be giving your child one of the greatest gifts you could ever give him…the gift of learning a second language.

Art Time Activities for Feelings Fun

Thursday, January 12th, 2012

Smile! You are on Candid Camera!  Take a picture of the children in your care after you have asked them to give their best happy, sad, surprised and scared faces.  There are so many things you can do with these pictures:  You can make a small book or make picture frames with cool handmade borders by the children or just simply hang these up for parents to look at.

You can discuss the different feelings.  Read one of the suggested books about feelings in our upcoming suggestions (in 2 days) and try to tie in the bilingual fun part of it with our song and book.

Parents love and adore this.  It can be a really inexpensive activity if you have a digital camera and just print off regular paper.

Music Makes My Feelings Go Round:  This is a fun way to show children how music makes you feel different – that different types of music evoke different feelings.

Set out large butcher paper if possible or at least large blank white pieces of paper along with paint and many paint brushes of various sizes.  (For the young, young crowd finger paints might even be the better choice!    YOU decide!)

Have a pre-set line up of songs set up with different types of music (Boca Beth bilingual fun, classical, rock, instrumental, and so on).  Give the children simple directions to paint on the paper to the speed of the music they hear and the mood they feel while each particular piece of music is playing.

You will most likely notice some slow painting and relaxed movements to classical and some very fast painting and rapid stroke lines during the more upbeat and fast songs.

Follow this art activity up with a discussion about feelings:  sad, happy, surprised, etc.

Babies Hear in Bilingual Manner – Help Your Baby Learn!

Thursday, October 13th, 2011

smiley-boy

I love when major publications with klout report on things that I have been saying for YEARS!

Just yesterday the NYTimes published an article titled Hearing Bilingual:  How Babies Sort Out Language (read the entire article right here).  This article informs us that babies (even in the womb) recognize multiple languages and are able to detect their various phonetic sounds.  Then around the age of 11 months (straight out of my notes from my research 11 years ago) the baby’s brain begins to acquire and recognize languages differently.

Hey!  Haven’t I been saying just that during my keynotes and early childhood workshops on how to bring Spanish and English together for babies, toddlers and preschoolers for almost 10 years?!?!?!  No worries – I have always been ahead of my time.

During these same bilingual keynotes and workshops for educators, homeschooling families and parents I have referred to Dr. Ellen Bialystok and her many studies over the years on bilingualism.  The NYTimes even featured her work in a recent article found here.

Here’s what all of this means for you as a parent, as a teacher, as a leader of a preschool center, school or homeschooling co-op:

START EARLY when it comes to introducing a second language to young children.  Watch these little ones and older ones enjoying Kiss is a beso / Beso es un kiss.  Our Boca Beth bilingual song being featured this week.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QS-JbLOrvlw

Want to win the DVD this music video is on?  ***7 other music videos are featured within this same DVD titled I Like Animals / Me gustan los animales from my Boca Beth Program and product line***

Simply read through the NYTimes article from yesterday, and comment below on one fascinating fact you discovered.  I will mail out 5 Boca Beth bilingual DVDs for children to learn Spanish to 5 separate winners based on your comments and how thorough they are.
