Why Should You Introduce a New Language Early?

Experts agree, the earlier the better when it comes to introducing a second language to that special young child in your life.  Ages birth through five are the most formative years of a child’s brain – with 90% of the human brain being developed by age 5.

It’s not wonder then that you should be thinking about your child’s early learning.  You see what a sponge your child is…make the most of this window of opportunity without pushing things, and your child will develop at an advanced rate thanks to the many benefits derived from working different areas of the brain.

Don’t get caught in the trap that many new parents believe ~ that is the “No second language for my child.  I do not want to confuse him and cause language delay by introducing a new language.  There will be plenty of time for her to learn a second and third language later in life.”

Truth be told, there will NOT be plenty of time for easy, fun, and non-threatening language learning later in life.  We all have experienced or witnessed how very difficult it is to acquire a new language once we enter our teen years.  There are scientific reasons as to why it becomes more difficult with age – never impossible, simply a lot more frustrating for most.

Just peek in on these two toddlers (one less than 2 years old, the other little guy just turned 2!!!) learning Spanish right alongside English in a very child-like way:

I strongly urge you to jump on this second language bandwagon today!  Choose the language that fits your family, your community, your heritage, whatever the reason for choosing the 2nd language you choose, and get going!  Make it fun, make it part of your daily routine, and you will be giving your child one of the greatest gifts you could ever give him…the gift of learning a second language.

Happy Educating!  ¡Sea feliz educando!
